OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha police officer arrested and charged with assault on Wednesday has a history of similar incidents.

John G. Sherman, 48, was arrested at his home Wednesday. Omaha police confirm that Sherman submitted his papers for retirement as a police officer Wednesday after 20 years of service. He is charged with third-degree assault and second-degree false imprisonment for an alleged incident involving his wife.

Sherman posted bail Thursday and was released from the Cass County Jail.

KETV NewsWatch obtained court records of seven protection order requests filed against Sherman dating back several years. Only one was granted. It was filed by Sherman's first ex-wife in 2002. In the filing, she states that after she'd moved out of their home, she was "very afraid he would find me" and that "the harassment has been constant." She went on to say, "I am afraid all of the time now because I cannot feel safe in my own home."

Sarpy County Sheriff's Deputy Jay Becklun filed a protection order against Sherman last summer, but it was dismissed. Becklun said he was concerned for the safety of his children, who were living with his ex-wife who was married to Sherman. Becklun said he even took the matter to Sherman's fellow Omaha Police Department officers to no avail.

"I went down and filed a complaint, and the complaint turned into a criminal complaint and they investigated it," Becklun said. "I contacted Omaha over and over again, and I was never told that he was ever disciplined."

Omaha police would not comment on Sherman's retirement request, or about the results of any possible internal investigations regarding Sherman.

The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office said deputies are trying to locate Sherman to serve him with another protection order filed Thursday by Kimberly Sherman for her and her two children. She alleges John Sherman had made threatening calls to her and injured her in a struggle at his home.

KETV NewsWatch 7 attempted to find Sherman at his home for comment, but no one answered the door.
