Former trooper dead in Guatemala
ALASKA DIGEST
Anchorage Daily News, AK
Published: October 28, 2006

CENTRAL AMERICA -- A former Alaska state trooper on the run for years from a charge that he killed a girlfriend in Nevada in 1995 has been found dead in Central America, the FBI said.

Meanwhile, his current girlfriend and the couple's two children were found slain in a nearby city.

The body of John Patrick Addis was positively identified this week by fingerprints, said David Staretz, spokesman for the FBI in Nevada.

Addis, 56, had been on the lam since Joanne Albanese vanished in 1995. Her remains were found three years later in Arizona, and he was charged with killing her. A nationwide manhunt began.

Addis moved all over the country and resettled in Mexico, according to authorities.

Authorities said they are investigating Addis's death as a suicide and the death of his family as murder.

Addis' body was found in a hotel room in Guatemala City, Guatemala, several hours away from the city in Mexico where his girlfriend and children were found dead, according to material on the "America's Most Wanted" Web site. The television show has featured Addis multiple times.

Addis had been teaching English and tennis in Mexico, according to the Web site.

Addis was a homicide investigator with the Alaska State Troopers in the 1970s and 1980s. He was an instructor in crime scene and death investigations.

He was an Alaska fugitive at the time Albanese disappeared, having violated parole after a 1987 conviction on parental abduction charges.

EX-COP GONE BAD WANTED FOR MURDER

Overview
Ex-Cop Gone Bad Wanted For Murder
As a state trooper in Alaska in the 80s, John Addis excelled in crime scene investigation and forensics.
John Patrick Addis is an intriguing individual. In the 1980s, Addis was a state trooper in Alaska. He rose quickly from patrolling the highways of the Alaskan interior to homicide detective.
His former colleagues remember him as highly intelligent, but somewhat eccentric. During his stint as a trooper, Addis lived on the outskirts of Fairbanks with his wife and two young children. He played the French horn, flew his own small airplane, hunted, fished, studied UFOs and worshipped the deity RAH. Police say he abused his wife, both physically and emotionally. According to investigators, she became a prisoner in the log cabin they shared. The marriage finally ended in a bitter divorce.
After the divorce, his wife received custody of the children, but Addis kidnapped them and flew his plane to Montana. When police caught up with Addis, he was convicted of custodial interference. He did a few months in jail, effectively ending his career in law enforcement.
Could a crime scene expert have covered up the scene of his own crime?
A New Life -- And A Crime Scene That's Just Too Clean

Addis and Joann Albanese in happier times.

By 1995, Addis had relocated to Las Vegas, and reinvented himself as a body-builder and personal trainer. While working at a local gym, Addis met an attractive divorcee named Joann Albanese.
At first, Addis seemed like the perfect boyfriend. He was attentive, wrote love letters, and moved into her lovely home. However, as time passed, the abusive, controlling John Addis reemerged. Before long, Joann realized she couldn't tolerate being treated like a slave and tried to break the relationship off.
On August 19, 1995, Joann Albanese disappeared. So did John Addis. Initially, the case was classified as missing persons because there was no crime scene, no witnesses, and most importantly, no dead body. But when Detective Larry Hanna of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Unit learned of Addis's background as a former cop and homicide investigator, Joann's vanishing without a trace and the absence of a crime scene made him very suspicious.
Addis became the prime suspect in Joann's disappearance. The night before she vanished, police say Joann told a girlfriend she was breaking up with John, and was going to tell him.
The only clue police had was Joann's car. It had been found in Little Hell's Canyon near Prescott, Ariz. An extensive search of the desert area near the car turned up nothing.
But in mid-1998, a hunter stumbled across human skeletal remains in the Arizona desert. DNA tests proved it was Joann Albanese.
On July 31, 1998, a grand jury in Clark County, Nev., charged John Addis with the murder and kidnapping of Joann -- but there was still no sign of him.
Accused Killer Moves South of Border
Addis started dating this woman in Guadalajara, Mexico. The two have since disappeared.
Investigators have since learned that in 1997, Addis was living in Guadalajara, Mexico under the aliases John Charles Elwars and John Charles Stone. There, he began dating a Mexican woman named Laura Liliana Padilla Squares, who was 26 at the time.
But Addis and Laura vanished from Guadalajara and have not been seen since. Her family believes Addis kidnapped Laura. Detective Hanna and Laura's family fear the worst, but are holding out hope that she could still be alive and traveling with Addis.

West Virginia OFFICER Murders Stepdaughter & Beat Wife

...Lisa Pierson was still alive when a relative found her shortly after noon, but she died on the way to the hospital, officials said. Her daughter was dead at the scene. A large hand tool believed to be the weapon was recovered from the house, authorities said. Fearing Pierson jumped off the bridge, authorities searched the Kanawha River Sunday, finding him in his uniform on the river bank downstream about 11 p.m... Lucy Barker said her daughter Lisa Pierson was at least five months pregnant... State Police are gaurding the suspect's room at Charleston Area Medical Center’s General Hospital. He is being treated for a shoulder injury and hypothermia after it is believed he jumped off the Yeager Bridge.

Police: Officer suspected of beating wife, stepdaughter to death before suicide attempt
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A state corrections officer is suspected of beating his wife and stepdaughter to death shortly before he apparently jumped off a bridge in a suicide attempt, state police said.

Stanley Pierson, 38, was in stable condition Monday at a Charleston hospital, said State Police Cpl. J.D. Perry at a news conference. He was found in his uniform on a riverbank late Sunday and was taken to the hospital in handcuffs, officials said.

Pierson's wife may have been pregnant, officials said.

State police are working with prosecutors to determine how to charge Pierson in the bludgeoning deaths of his 39-year-old wife, Lisa, and her daughter, Casey Barker, 20, at their home near Malden, five miles southeast of Charleston.

He is cooperating with troopers, Perry said.

The charges may depend on the outcome of an autopsy. Neighbors told investigators that Lisa Pierson was pregnant, state police Sgt. J.C. Lee said.

If she was, Pierson could be charged under the 2005 Unborn Victims Act, which says an embryo or fetus is considered a victim, separate from the mother, in cases of murder, voluntary manslaughter, battery and domestic assault.

It was unclear Monday whether Pierson had a lawyer.

State police believe the incident occurred between the time Pierson left work at 6 a.m. Sunday and when his vehicle was reported parked on a bridge on the West Virginia Turnpike about 11 a.m.

Lisa Pierson was still alive when a relative found her shortly after noon, but she died on the way to the hospital, officials said. Her daughter was dead at the scene.

A large hand tool believed to be the weapon was recovered from the house, authorities said.

Fearing Pierson jumped off the bridge, authorities searched the Kanawha River Sunday, finding him in his uniform on the river bank downstream about 11 p.m.

Pierson has been a correctional officer at the Charleston Work Release Center for seven years. Before that, he worked three years at Mount Olive, a maximum-security state prison, said Joe Thornton, a spokesman for the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety.

Thornton described Pierson as a model employee. He was cited for his "excellent interpersonal skills" in being named employee of the quarter in the Division of Corrections newsletter in May.

Slain Kanawha Woman Was Pregnant, Mother Says
Police await confirmation from medical examiner

CHARLESTON – A Kanawha County woman beaten to death with a farm tool over the weekend was pregnant, her mother said.

Lucy Barker said her daughter Lisa Pierson was at least five months pregnant.

Pierson, 39, and her daughter Casey Barker, 20, were found beaten to death inside their Campbells Creek home Sunday afternoon.

Pierson’s body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in South Charleston. Police are still waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine if she was pregnant.

Investigators said two counts of first-degree murder charges may be filed against Stanley Pierson, Lisa's husband and Barker's stepfather, as early as Wednesday.

State Police are gaurding the suspect's room at Charleston Area Medical Center’s General Hospital. He is being treated for a shoulder injury and hypothermia after it is believed he jumped off the Yeager Bridge.

Doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve pressure in the child’s brain. The child also had healing bruises on her forehead, back and neck, and an adult bite mark on her left leg... a brain scan revealed that the left-side of her brain is beginning to swell. Condition of abused girl worsens
Father says 2-year-old is near death. Authorities have accused a
Kansas City police officer.

The condition of an abused 2-year-old girl took a deadly turn for the worse Saturday — despite hopes that she had been improving a night earlier, her father said.

“She is definitely going to die,” said her father, Chris Eickmeier. “There’s just no chance.”

Alyssa Eickmeier was injured early Thursday in her Clay County residence and taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital. Authorities have accused Kansas City police officer Nicholas A. Minet, 28, of shaking her and throwing her down because she would not stop crying. He is charged with first-degree assault and abuse.

The change in Alyssa’s condition was a terrible blow to her father and the rest of the family, Eickmeier said, because they had hoped she would recover.

“Yesterday, before everyone left the hospital, she was showing eye movement. She was moving on her own,” he said. But by Saturday morning, that had all changed, he said. Tests showed that the other side of her brain had swollen, he said.

Although doctors plan to perform another test this morning, it’s clear that Alyssa won’t make it, he said.

She suffered brain injuries and a skull fracture Thursday, and doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve pressure in her brain, authorities said Friday. She also had older bruises on her forehead, back and neck that were healing and an adult bite mark on her left leg, court records said.

According to the documents, Minet was babysitting the girl at her home in the 400 block of Northwest 71st Terrace, and he had become frustrated with her when she started to cry and shook her.

“This was just a shocking thing. No one was ready for this,” Eickmeier said.

He said that the girl’s mother and he were concerned that they would not be able to afford the cost of hospital bills and funeral arrangements, so his best friends Matt and Jessicia Myers were setting up a fund for his daughter.

Late Saturday night, he said he was going over to their home to help set up a myspace.com page to help memorialize his daughter with photographs and tell people about the fund.

“Any loving father in his right mind — it makes you insane it’s for real,” he said. “Three days of crying, three days of up and down emotions, how would you feel?”

“I’m used to my daughter happy and all over the place,” he said.

Bam!!! The school door’s of Fairmount school smashed behind Kevin as he walked out. Everyone had already left, but he stayed behind studying really hard for his math test. Kevin hopped onto his sky blue Schwin bike and peddled furiously to get home. He saw some early trick or treater’s run by, crunching on delicate orange-brown leaves. He smelled crisp, clean October air. It was a darn dark day today, thought Kevin. A leaf fell from a tree. Maybe the day of Halloween is cursed just like Patrick, (Kevin’s best friend) said. As Kevin heard the familiar skid of his bike stopping in the driveway, he remembered how bad last year's Halloween was. He'd gotten squat for candy, And Mr. Winslow’s house was stupid but cool. I wonder if I'll go next year. he thought.
Drip. Drip. Drip. The toxic potion slowly and steadily dripped onto the test subject under the full moon in California. “This potion will make this pumpkin way cool, and super big,” said the weird wacky wacko scientist as he dripped the potion onto the pumpkin. Whoosh!!! BEEP... BEEP... BEEP. The scientist jumped at the sound of the pumpkin radar whooshing into action. This radar showed any results from the pumpkin, and a beep meant high results. Suddenly, the pumpkin sprang alive and the scientist thought he was going to eat him with his teeth gnashing out. Instead, he threw him into a closet, but he grew to the size of an elephant and he burst through the closet door. “I can talk, and I love candy. Said the pumpkin. The pumpkin gazed at a map of Downers Grove IL. “My target is to steal candy from that town!!!” He said as he took the map.

Court to hear former city police chief's lawsuit
Baltimore Sun, MD
By Gus G. Sentementes
October 20, 2006

The state's highest court agreed this week to hear the lawsuit filed by a former Baltimore police commissioner who claimed that he was wrongfully terminated by the mayor nearly two years ago.

The lawsuit was filed by Kevin P. Clark, a top police commander in New York City who was recruited to run Baltimore's Police Department in 2003.

A city Circuit Court judge ruled in favor of the city's right to terminate Clark based on terms in his contract.

But a Court of Special Appeals judge in June reinstated the lawsuit, saying the earlier judge erred in ruling that the termination provision in Clark's contract was "valid and enforceable."

The city petitioned the Court of Appeals to review the lawsuit.

Mayor Martin O'Malley removed Clark from office after saying that allegations of domestic abuse had eroded his ability to lead the department.

Neil M. Janey Sr., Clark's attorney, said the former commissioner wants his job back, as well as back pay and compensatory damages for "the embarrassment and humiliation for the manner he was removed from office."

He said oral arguments are expected to take place early next year. Ralph S. Tyler, Baltimore's city solicitor, said he believed the city would prevail in the case.

"We have always believed, and continue to believe, when Kevin Clark entered into this contract, he agreed to this term," Tyler said. "The term is valid, and we're optimistic that that will be the ultimate determination in the case."

Dental Assistant at office where 5-year-old died had no training

At The Hearing, to see if the Dentist should have his license reinstated his assistant, a woman actually asked th Board-- What's a stethoscope?
Her dentist gave 5-year-old Diamond Brownridge four times the amount of anesthesia for her size, then left her alone with a dental assistant who had no formal training and didn't even know what a stethoscope is, according to testimony Friday at a state hearing over whether the dentist should lose his license.

The state suspended the dental license of Hicham Riba on Sept. 29, two days after Diamond died on life support.

Attorneys for the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation on Friday told an administrative law judge that Riba gave Diamond a fatal overdose of oral and intravenous sedatives that put the 35-pound kindergartner into an irreversible coma, and that the dentist isn't even licensed to practice deep sedation -- only conscious sedation.

"Although these doses were already high, additional doses were given," said veteran oral surgeon and University of Illinois Professor William Flick, testifying as the state's expert witness. "All of the effects of these drugs are additive. The more drugs, the more you're going to see the negative side effects . . . respiratory and cardiovascular depression."

New System Warns Victims of Violence

Tags:
@ 05:04 PM (21 months, 3 hours ago)
In the State of Washington Victims of crime often live in fear that the person that attacked them may do it again, but now Washington State has a new tool to help keep crime victims safe.

The new tool is VINE, which stands for “Victim Information Notification Everyday” and it allows crime victims to go to the website - or pick up the phone - and find out when an offender is scheduled for release. Victims’ advocates say it’s an invaluable tool in the healing process.

If anyone should have known her attacker was about to be released it would be Julie Harmia. She was attacked 25 years ago by South Hill rapist Kevin Coe and she had no idea her attacker's release date was imminent until the state attorney general's office called about the civil commitment process.

"I lived in blissful ignorance for basically 20 years," Harmia said during a recent interview. “The fear that he's coming to kill me is very close to the surface."

Victims’ advocate Maria Gallucci says more needs to be done.

“Anything we can do to empower the victims so they can plan their life, feel safe or have time to implement a safety plan and have a little more control of their life,” Gallucci said.

One way to help empower them is through VINE, which Washington State plans to have available in all 58 counties across the state by the end of the year. The system allows victims to find out online or by phone that an offender's release date is approaching.

Right now, the state Department of Corrections has a fairly sophisticated system of notifying victims but many counties - including Spokane - do not, meaning victims often find out too late that someone is being released.

“They don't know how to get a hold of the person whose life is affected or they've moved or there's some reason they can't get the information until much later,” Gallucci said.

And though it's too late for a lot of victims it could mean peace of mind for many more.

Spokane County should have the VINE system online by the end of the year with training on the system planned for early December. Hopefully other States will follow and implement the same program.  If you are a victim of domestic violence and the abuser is about to be released, it is important to create a safety plan.  Go to you local library and pick uo a copy of "Defending Our Lives" getting away from domestic violence and staying safe.  Or consider contacting the National Coalition against domestic violence, at 1-800-799-SAFE.  Services are free and confidential where you live in the united states.

Teaching/ learning research shows that people perform quite differently in different situations - e.g. some people need more time to take tests cuz they work slowly/ poorly under pressure.

God Hates Blogs and we are All Going to Hell

According to a blog...Bloggers are going to hell one entry at a time, according to Kevin D. Denee of the Restored Church of God's Ambassador Youth magazine:

Should teenagers and others in the Church express themselves to the world through blogs? Because of the obvious dangers; the clear biblical principles that apply; the fact that it gives one a voice; that it is almost always idle words; that teens often do not think before they do; that it is acting out of boredom; and it is filled with appearances of evil -- blogging is simply not to be done in the Church. It should be clear that it is unnecessary and in fact dangerous on many levels.

Let me emphasize that no one—including adults -- should have a blog or personal website (unless it is for legitimate business purposes).

Amish Mourn and Forgive Gunman

As I read the story about those in the Amish community it made me stop and think about how much anger and hate we all walk around with in our lives.  I realize if this were my child I would be out of mind with grief and could never even think of forgiving such a person.  We only have once chance in this lifetime, although sometimes I wish we could have a dress rehearsal, first.  Walking around being angry serves no purpose.  And the Amish community believe that God has a great plan for them.  The Amish don't hear the same voices of self destruction many of us do at difficult times in our lives.  They know they have God's love and their actions have spoken volumes to a country whose people have turned to the click of a remote control or the delete button on the computer board or the newest technology of the day, in order to make their lives, better.

But, what better example is there to learn from a God loving community who not only practice what they preach, but live it, each and every day.

Can You Help I.D. This Little Girl?? Murdered in '79

Tags:

This computer-generated illustration provided by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department shows what an unidentified murder victim may have looked like in 1979 when her body was found in Caledonia, N.Y. The girl, believed to be about 15 years old, was shot in the forehead beside a country road in Caledonia the night of Nov. 8, 1979, then was dragged into the field and shot again in the back, police said. To try to unmask the identity of a teenage girl found slain in a cornfield in western New York in 1979, investigators have turned to a pollen-analysis technique rarely used in the United States in hopes of pinpointing where she once lived. Icky, Sticky, Smelly & Dangerous

Tags:

Kent State's college degreed Professor Julio Pino begins today on one of his opening posts said "Inside the brain of George Bush: icky, sticky, smelly and dangerous:" Yes Bloghi's  Global War.  A real receipe for danger even when he is only capable of cutting and pasting news stories from around the globe. To use his own words, one wonders just how icky, sticky, smelly and dangerous this professor of history is while teaching at the University.  Shaping minds with his views is a receipe for disaster.   Afterall, he claims to be an American.  And yet, he dances like a clown at a circus when our men and women who are fighting for our country, posting cheers, when blood is shed.  Maybe the Professor should look outside his computer screen and realize the damage he does when he supports people like Osama bin Ladin.  And the University Board Members who support his daily posting often in the hundred's, look at his words and how he is not shaping and creating a healthy environment, for the university and it's student body.   Sword throwing is dangerous, especially when your wearing a blindfold, unable to see the truth.    Makes one wonder what kind of brains are at the helm of our state funded Universities, doesn't it?

Angry: My View on the Insanity of School Tragedies

Tags:
@ 06:41 AM (21 months, 11 days ago)

Yet another day passes and innocent children, once, again are killed.  This time in a quiet Amish community in Pennsylvania.  The shooter, just as in the other recent tragedy, seperated the girls from the boys.  I watched nightline tonight as they reported on the shootings.  The children wisked away by helicopters taken to other hospitals for immediate medical attention.  Faxes sent by hospitals to the police department so they could notify the parents in this community whose residents do not have the internet or cell phones or cable television. They lead a simple quiet life.  That was up until, today.  Another officer as he carried a 6-year old girl out to safety, died in his arms.  And the reporter at the scene covering the story, barely able to complete his report, overcome with emotion.
