This is beyond my comprehension. Three kids shot multiple times, and their mother. Almost "ganglike" fashion. And this father, is only grazed in the foot. Again, why didn't he immediately get help? At if he is found guilty, will there be an insanity defense? Are we going to have to use tax payers dollars to warehouse this piece of garbage? This just turns my stomach!

• Family found in SUV

"Does that even make sense?" Phillips said of the version of events authorities say the sole survivor -- Phillips' son-in-law, Christopher Vaughn -- gave police investigating the bizarre Thursday crime scene.

"I don't believe it."

Dozens of votive candles left by concerned friends lined the driveway of the Vaughns' Oswego home Friday, one day after Kimberly Vaughn, 34, and her three children -- Abigayle, 12, Cassandra, 11, and Blake, 8 -- were found shot to death on an isolated road off Interstate 55 in rural Will County.

Four white crosses bearing the victims' names protruded from the family's front lawn. Stuffed animals and cards from classmates studded the grass.

Christopher Vaughn, 32, told police that the shootings occurred early Thursday, while the Vaughn clan was on a trip to a Springfield water park, authorities said.

Christopher Vaughn said he pulled off I-55 to secure some luggage on top of the red 2004 Ford Expedition and when he got back in the SUV, his wife began firing a handgun, wounding him in the leg, officials said. Vaughn fled on foot and when he returned to the SUV, his wife and children had all been shot, authorities say Vaughn recounted.
