Hooking Up Craig's List-Deadly Outcome

Missing Girl
Police in Jacksonville, Fla., arrested John Steven Burgess earlier this week. Burgess was wanted by authorities in California in connection to the disappearance of female college student Donna Jou, right, one month ago.

Authorities in California hope an arrest 2,400 miles away may help break the case of a coed who disappeared more than a month ago under suspicious circumstances.

Acoording to ABC NEWS--Police in Jacksonville, Fla., arrested John Steven Burgess, 35, who also goes by the name Sinjin Stevens, on a drug charge Tuesday, Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the sheriff's office in Orange County, California

Burgess, a convicted sex offender, is a person of interest in the disappearance of Donna Jou, a 19-year-old who had just finished her freshman year at San Diego State University and who met Burgess on the Web site Craig's List. Jou was spending the summer at her parents' house in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and according to her sister, was eager to meet new friends in the area.

Police say that on June 23, Burgess picked Jou up on his motorcycle to take her to a party at his Los Angeles-area home. According to Amormino, Jou did not know about Burgess' sex offender status, which he received because of a conviction for lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor, or that he'd been arrested for male prostitution.

It was the last time Jou's family saw her and the beginning of a month of investigative turns that until this week had produced many leads but few answers.

The day after Jou's disappearance, a text message was sent from her phone to her mother indicating that she loved her and that she would be home soon. The family found the correspondence  the final time Jou's cell phone was used  "unusual."

Investigators obtained a warrant to search Jou's computer records, which confirmed that she had been in contact with Burgess.

They then discovered that Burgess was a sex offender, and because he had not properly registered his sex offender status, police were able to obtain a warrant to search Burgess' home.

By that time, he was gone.

On July 9, police recovered a black tool box that belonged to Burgess about a mile and a half from his house and was designed to fit into the back of his Ford Ranger pickup truck. In it were various items, including a rope, scrub brush and license plate SINJIN 1 that was registered to his truck.

Investigators also received an e-mail purportedly from Burgess that included vague information about her disappearance, according to The Orange County Register. It remains unclear whether the message was a hoax.

As time goes on, there's been no cell phone activity, the chances of her returning are less and less," Amormino told ABC News Wednesday.

But the arrest of Burgess Tuesday, which Orange County investigators just learned about, may finally provide Jou's family and friends with some explanation about what happened to the college student.

Many parents who did not agree with the charges and the trial, believed the couple did not commit a crime.  But, those same parents did not loose their children.  Parents must remain vigil in knowing where their children are, what they are doing, and with whom they are with at all times.  Saying there is a party at a friends house and the parents will be home, could also have consequences to your teenagers well being.

College Campus Police Require Greater Police Powers

@ 02:31 PM (11 months, 20 days ago)

Law Enforcement on College Campuses regarding the carrying of guns is up in Iowa for debate at the University.  They go through the same training as regular law enforcement, so it would make sense for them to be armed.  With the wide spread crime at colleges, much of which the general public is never made aware, except in crsisis, policies should incorporate a greater security measure's.   Attacks on college campuses earlier this year sparked debate over whether campus police should be armed. Reports from security at Iowa's three regent universities suggest the time has come for officers to carry guns. But it will not be easy.

In Defense Of Amy Jacobson-News Reporter

Tags:
@ 12:15 AM (11 months, 29 days ago)
The story is so 'hot' it made not only national headlines, and was also featured as the lead on AOL the entire day.  It's sad when a competing news organization like WBBM sinks to an all time low by breaking such a "story" if you can call it that.

I know for a fact, many reporters would not be where there are today of they had not gone that extra mile for a story, including many former and current members of the WBBM Channel 2 news team.   There is a code or at least I thought there was among reporters and news desks, and today, is, a sad day.  Perhaps by going that extra mile the former seasoned reporter Amy Jacobson would have been able to gain more insight into the disappearance of Lisa Stebic.  And, at the very least perhaps she would have eventually been able to get closer to the truth

I also happen to know Amy Jacobson, although I have not seen her in a few years, she covered many a battered woman's story and attended various press conferences reporting on the plight of these women.  She is a mother, who happens to be a reporter, taking her work as she always has, very seriously.

At the end of the day, for some reporters anyway, they get the job done because they have drive compassion and heart.  I know we will be seeing Amy Jacobson again, as we always have, covering crime, breaking news stories and reporting the truth, but at a different news station with more freedom to get the story told!  Send your comments to her former news station at : www.nbc5.com
