Chicago's Mayor Rejects Candidates For Top Cop
The Chicago Media is surprised Mayor Daley has yet to decide on the next top spot on a new superintendent for the Police Department. He has rejected the three front runners saying he is "not impressed" with the current list of individuals.
Perhaps the Mayor is looking for someone who is not in law enforcement. Actually thinking outside the "the blue brotherhood box", it is possible. His father hired outside of police ranks.
In 1960, Daley tapped O.W. Wilson, a highly respected criminologist from the University of California at Berkeley, to lead a committee to find a new police superintendent. After a month, the committee made a surprise recommendation: Wilson. he served eight years in that position. It was a move that proved to be effective. Wilson revamped the entire department and their procedures, thus, eliminating the corruption during that time. And through the years, the Department has lost it's focus in the area of crime as it pertains to their current police force.
I am also surprised that Rev's Jackson and Sharpton have been silent on this topic. But, maybe for once, they realize they have no power in the decision making process. The city has grown in corruption, brutality and violence. It is about time a Mayor in any major city, takes a step back going into a holding pattern until the right person for the job applies.
