Is The  911 Movie Release Really Necessary?

Oliver Stone invited New York police and firefighters get early look at his new movie.

In NEW YORK where Police and firefighters who risked their lives at the World Trade Center site are attending private screenings  of Oliver Stone's Nine-Eleven movie this week.

Stone's movie, called "World Trade Center," stars Nicholas Cage as one of two Port Authority police officers who survived the towers' collapse and were rescued from the rubble.

Was making the movie something the public will accept?   A police union official warns the experience of seeing the movie could be too traumatic for the rescuers. And I am sure the families and victims will also experience trauma if they decide to see the movie.

The movie opens nationwide August 9, 2006.

This is the second Sept. 11-themed movie to be released this year.

In April, Universal Pictures released "United 93," a real-time docu-drama about the fateful United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers fought back against the hijackers.

Unlike "World Trade Center," the cast was made up largely of unknowns and character actors. Some of the roles were filled by actual air traffic control and military personnel on duty on Sept. 11, 2001.

The film met controversy, even though it was made in cooperation with the families of the passengers and crew members of Flight 93. Universal donated more than $1 million -- 10 percent of its opening weekend gross -- to the Flight 93 Memorial Fund.

Paramount studio donated an additional $250,000 to the fund.  Does that make the big wound that the nation is still grieving from alright?  Time will tell.
