Arming Teachers With Guns is Just Plain Dumb
With the recent rash of school violence a lawmaker in Wisconsin is proposing that teacher's be allowed to carry weapons to school with them. Can you see the campaign headlines now? Or perhaps instead of the prestigious Golden Apple Teacher Award, we can expect the Silver Shot Take Aim and Shoot Awards. Or your dinner conversation was your 6-year old describing the cool 357 magnum they got to see and touch during "show and tell".
Republican Representative Frank Lasee says it's a concept that's worked in Israel and Thailand, so why not Wisconsin?
Lasee says if teachers had guns, students or others would think twice about committing acts of violence in schools.
Middleton-Cross Plains Superintendent William Reis says Lasee's idea isn't reasonable. He says it's only asking for more trouble.
Under a proposal, no teacher would be required to carry a weapon, but those who want to would get extensive training. Lasee is from Bellevue, near Green Bay, where an attack on a school was recently prevented.
